New York Water Tower Redwood Reclaimed and Recycled into a giant 60 ft. bar at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show Lounge

MFPNY collaborates with International Stone Collections, and RBW Studio, LLC to create a stunning masterpiece bar in the main lounge at the show for the world to see and touch. Ligne Roset will furnish the lounge in rich brilliant texture to compliment our centerpiece.

Initial layout of the bar design

The New York City skyline is legendary for its skyscrapers, architecture and the water towers on nearly every building over six stories tall. The water towers started to appear in New York City in the 1800’s as a way to bring water to upper floors in taller buildings. Often the redwood tanks were built and installed by whiskey barrel makers during that time. Each tank was held together with only steel straps with no adhesive to keep the contents pure. Each tank has a life span of approximately 40 years. These timeless structures are a signature of New York just like Central Park.
Old face horizontal grain, hand rubbed with a special white finish for the bar at the show

International Stone Collections construct a massive, stone bar made of Victoria White, rare imported white granite from Sierra Leone. A free flowing chain pattern comprised of Nero Marquina and Bardiglio stones designed by Nicole Fuller Interiors and cut by Creative Edge is intricately inlayed within the stone. The fixture sits atop an up-cycled wood base, reclaimed from New York water tower redwood by Manhattan Forest Products, inc.

Manhattan Forest Products, Inc. is no stranger to making beautiful bars in addition to our wood flooring. We recently completed a live edge oak bar at David Bouley’s Brushstrokerestaurant along with all of the woodwork inside his breathtaking creation.

Where is the Coney Island Boardwalk now?

Mystery Solved. We have it here.

Authentic Coney Island Boardwalk reclaimed wood flooring

NYC’s most famous playground, Coney Island, has been undergoing a facelift. Sections of the boardwalk are being replaced with concrete and synthetic wood. The species of wood (such as ipe) that was used for years as decking are being depleted due to the deforestation of the Amazon rain forests.

The Coney Island Boardwalk construction began in 1921. It opened on May 15, 1923. It’s almost 90 years old! It’s 80 feet wide, 2 miles long and contains about 1.3 million boards. These boards have seen it all. They've withstood hurricanes (Hurricane Donne 1960), caravans of garbage trucks, sand, wind, sun and millions of visitors. These boards have inspired artists (“Under the Boardwalk, The Drifters, 1960). The boardwalk has given shade to those ducking underneath, and privacy for those seeking a smooch. Over 100 movies have been made on the Coney Island Boardwalk including, American Gangster, Street's of Gold, The Pick Up Artist, and Brighton Beach Memoirs just to name a few.

Think of the rich history of this place. Picture the first round of immigrants coming here to let loose and blow off steam. They experienced the freak shows, the Cyclone roller coaster (built in 1927), the street food, and live music. What a spectacle it was and still is. Today you can watch the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest (66 in 12 minutes!), participate in the Mermaid parade (sea creatures galore), ride the same Wonder Wheel your Grandparents rode (built 1918), pay a quarter to use the bathroom, make a wish to Zoltar and see a two headed gerbil all in one day! The Coney Island Boardwalk is a symbol of NYC. It’s a wonderful, crazy, charmingly tacky symbol, part of our history, part of our past, part of us.

Since that time, Coney Island has seen many renovations and we were fortunate enough to have a piece of history by reclaiming the boardwalk wood, now you can too.
