Experimenting with materials is how we make interesting floors

These two photos are examples of a new floor we're working on called MIRAGE. It consists of end grain cut, reclaimed New York water tower redwood. The most interesting part of this process is that you can see the mineral deposits in the wood from the waterline seepage in the original water tanks. These tanks are typically 40 to 90 years old. You can read more about the water tower redwood below. The curvature of the planks visible in these two samples is due to the natural curve of the water tank. After trial and error, the only way to make a floor using the end grain is to stagger the planks without going in a complete circle. The end result is a very interesting floor pattern that is one of a kind. This floor is still in it's experimental stage, but if you are interested, please feel free to give us a call. Standing Dead Oak Tree Wood Floor Installed in a Closet

One of our most popular white oak wood floors comes from standing dead oak trees found across the state of New York and Illinois. This floor was recently installed in a beautiful walnut closet to off set the rich dark hues. Silver Streak has a micro beveled edge that is soft to the touch and easy on the feet. The wood does have some interesting characteristics up close including some natural irregularities. The wood is wire brushed and can be made in random widths from 3 inches to 9 inches with custom narrower or wide planks available upon request.

Below is some additional information about the reclaimed standing dead oak trees.

The Evolution of a White Floor Sample

Because we are a full service mill, our customers often ask us to create a custom finish or have a new idea for their flooring. Each clients needs are unique so we want to give them the attention they deserve.

Our client has a beautiful home in Florida and asked us to start with a white oak floor, make it whiter, grayer, but still with some grain. Our craftspeople accepted the challenge and started down the path of making samples for the client to review. Below is where we went and how we got there.

It took some time to get it right, because everyone sees things in their minds eye a different way. The floor underneath these samples is our standard white oak floor. As you can see, we went through quite a few versions of this, to interpret the customer’s ideas. The best way to do it some times is go to extremes. On one end, we have a vibrant white that almost wipes out any indication of wood grain. We then take it in another direction to go gray. Ultimately, we take cues from our clients and we end up with a stunning result, all natural oils, not paint, non-toxic, environmentally friendly finishes that will last.

DIAMOND WHITE

Our client ultimately selected our newest white oak finish called Diamond White. It has just enough gray and white with grain showing through. We were able to create an additional finish below, which is also a very beautiful look for white oak.

If you like these finishes, come visit us at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show Booth #480. We are debuting some real ground breaking designs in a crowded world of reclaimed wood flooring.
